Eight ways of wellbeing

About CLANGERS

What does
CLANGERS stand for?

CLANGERS is an acronym depicting eight things we can all do to maintain and improve our wellbeing. Practised regularly, they should improve mood and energy levels and increase self-awareness.

The Origin

Built on evidence, extended with care

The first five letters are rooted in the Five Ways to Wellbeing — an evidence-based framework developed by the New Economics Foundation, funded by government research.

BIM friend Dr Phil Hammond built upon these foundations and added three more — Eat well, Relax, and Sleep, to create a plan for whole-body wellbeing. He also emphasises the importance of having at least 5 portions of fun a day!

CLANGERS are the fundamentals of feeling good and, if practised regularly, should improve our mood and energy levels and increase our self-awareness in terms of what we need to focus on in order to improve our wellbeing.

Starting conversations that matter

CLANGERS aren’t just a list, they’re a launchpad for meaningful conversations about wellbeing, particularly with young people.

Films for schools & beyond

During Lockdown, we made several films featuring young people talking about what they do to get their daily CLANGERS. These films have been shown in schools, at staff training sessions and in a variety of other settings.

A solution-focused approach

We now work with individuals, families, schools and other organisations to enable people to have a CLANGERS conversation, focusing upon what they are already doing well and which aspects they hope to improve.
